Webmaster's Pre- Season Division VAA Poll 2005-2006

Rank School Record Comments
Rolling Hills Prep0-4 (0-0)Got to give Coach Knigin his props, he makes his teams win. Senior Courtney Beach comes back smarter and bigger to play inside. And Senior Cameron Edison returns, both very much improved and anxious to win back the CIF-SS Div VAA championship. #23, their soph center will be better and smarter with a year under his belt. Their preseason is always tough to get them ready. Does not hurt playing Price and New Roads and Ribet twice during season. Their weakness, as always is lack of depth.
Hillcrest Christian GH1-0 (0-0)Hillcrest Christian GH lost Drew Rigney, POY in Div VAA. This is a huge loss. They also lost Bobby Sherman, a workhorse last season. Dallas Rutherford returns to play point although he likes to shoot too much to be a pure #1. And they return Ryan Halliday, a true candidate for POY if HCGH can make the finals. Ryan Lemus returns for his senior year as well. However, they also lost their coach, last year's coach of the year. Defending both Rutherford and Halliday will be a tough task for any Div VAA team.
Hesperia Christian1-0 (0-0)Hesperia Christian only lost one starter and one other player from a tall and deep team. Strong and tall backcourt. Junior Sean Bayer at 6'5" returns with a new leg and more strength after a football season. They also have Mike Maerzluft at 6'6" who plays all five positions. And they also return Mike Petersen, who would have been all-CIF if the team had gone further in the playoffs. Will 6' Petersen again be the X Factor for the Patriots? And they return two seasoned 6' guards in Billy Hague and Zach Howard. Big question for them is finding heart and leadership, two factors that were desperately missing in playoffs last year. And finally can they shoot free throws? But they are fully capable of beating everyone but RHP and Hillcrest Christian right now.
Community Harvest2-1 (0-0)Lost no one to graduation. Most of the team are seniors so this is their year to make a mark. Sy Prescott will lead this team. Playing in the toughest league in Div V in Socal will make them ready for the playoffs. They just have to play more consistently than last season. They also have to ensure that they get 12 wins in case they do not finish in the top three of the Harbor League
St. Anthony1-3 (0-0)They lost both Karl DeHesa and Aundre Cummings to graduation and Jed Hernandez transferred to Mayfair. Further big loss is the departure of Coach Steve Cristomo although they luckily got a good replacement in Coach Marx. They have Donte Moss 6' 4" and Dehesa's little brother and allegedly picked up three transfers including one from Mayfair. Plus they play mostly Div IV and above in preseason and in league. But they will have to overcome their dismal performance against Hillcrest Christian last season and all the personnel losses and changes.
Upland Christian3-0 (0-0)Only lost Roy Alilionwu to graduation. Played very well in summer for what that is worth including a good win over HCS. They need both JT Stephens and Andy Touche to play well every night. Should take the Metro League.
Calvary Chapel Moreno Valley2-0 (0-0)Division alignment brought them up from Div VA. They were a great teamin Div VA last year. They get every player back from last year's team and allegedly picked up a 6' 7" transfer from Riverside's King HS. Should be fun watching them play in Div VAA.
Ribet Academy2-2 (0-0)Ribet lost their coach but hired Dr. Gamal Smalley who has a good basketball reputation. Allegedly picked up two very tall African players including one who is 6' 9". Had a good summer. Real issue for the Fighting Frogs is with the tough schedule they have. Can they make playoffs? They play in the Webb Tourney where they lost in the championship game against upland Christian. Then they go to Westchester Tip Off Classic opening up against Narbonne (a loss). Then they play in the Pacifica Oxnard Tourney versus Taft, Oxnard and Ventura. And if that was not enough, they then go into league play in the Harbor League. Are they good enough to survive this tough schedule? They better get 12 wins or finish in top three of the Harbor. If they make playoffs, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
Capistrano Valley Christian2-1 (0-0)Lost their opener to Fairmont Prep. Both Scotts graduated but they still have Nick Cooper and Zach Brogdon who should provide the shooting this year.CVC has one of the worst gyms in Socal which plays to their advantage. Their coach gets the most out of what he has. They should finish third in their league and maybe get 12 wins besides.
California School for the Deaf, Riverside0-1 (0-0) Last year the Cubs almost beat a very good Apple Valley Christian in the playoffs, eventually losing 43-39. They did lose 6-3 Weir and 6-6 Brown to graduation but still have 6-6 Orion Palmer. This is my sleeper team this year. They should finish second or third in the Arrowhead League.
La Verne Lutheran2-0 (0-0)They now have a new coach. So it is a new dynamic for the players to deal with. Andrew MacElroy and Rashadd Whitfield will lead this team and they have a good pure point guard.
Holy Martyrs2-2 (0-0)Classic small sized Armenian school. No stars but five blue collar players with tremendous heart. They always make the playoffs.
Redlands Academy1-0 (0-0)Another Div VA bring up. They got knocked out in the first round of the playoffs last season. But they always put together a competitive team.
Boron1-2 (0-0)Way out in the desert but they have made playoffs the last few years.Coach Wiggs gets a lot out of what he finds out there. Saylor should be their star this season. Opened with a 53- 19 win vs Trona and missed a lot of team due to football playoffs.
Tarbut v Torah5-0 (0-0)One word, Jamie Stopnitzky. But this year Jamie has a good supporting cast. Spencer Wampole can pick up teh slack when Stopnitzky has an off night.
Pacific Hills4-0 (0-0)Loss of Julius Van Hanslik is tremendous blow to this team. Plus they now have a new coach. So it is a new dynamic for the players to deal with. They do have a better schedule than in past years.
